Western Governors back bills promoting cybersecurity for state and local government, electric grid

Western Governors urge Congress to support bills that strengthen cybersecurity, including the Securing Energy Infrastructure Act and the State and Local Government Cybersecurity Act of 2019.

In outreach to House and Senate leadership about the Securing Energy Infrastructure Act, WGA Chair North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and WGA Vice Chair Oregon Gov. Kate Brown assert: “The cybersecurity of our energy systems and other infrastructure is a high priority of Western Governors.”

The July 23, 2019 letter also reiterates the Governors’ support for cybersecurity research and development, and a working group to develop a national cyber strategy for the energy sector.

In a July 23, 2019 letter to encourage Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles Schumer on the State and Local Government Cybersecurity Act of 2019, the Governors encourage expedited consideration of a bill to provide financial and technical support to state, tribal, territorial and local governments to enhance cybersecurity.

“The cybersecurity of our nation is an all-of-government endeavor. Governors are eager to consult and coordinate with the federal government on all aspects of the issue,” states the outreach.
