WATCH: Reimagining Disability Employment Policy in the Rural West Webinar

The Western Governors’ Association hosted the webinar, Reimagining Disability Employment Policy in the Rural West, on April 16.

The month of July in 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The landmark piece of legislation is designed to ensure a more inclusive America, where every citizen has the right to participate in all aspects of society, including employment.

The anniversary provides states an opportunity to highlight their progress and to continue to take steps to remove barriers and improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities. This is especially critical in rural areas, where western states can serve as leaders in how they address opportunity, community, and especially connectivity.

Panelists on this webinar, including subject matter experts and state government representatives, shared examples of disability employment best practices and policy options, emphasizing effective strategies. They also highlighted how the State Exchange on Employment & Disability is working with state leaders to provide direct policy assistance, resources, and expertise on various disability employment-related issues.

The conversation was moderated by Jim Ogsbury, Executive Director of the Western Governors’ Association. Panelists included:

  • Bobby Silverstein, Principal, Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville, PC; Member of the State Exchange on Employment and Disability
  • Aaron Bangor, Lead Accessible Technology Architect, AT&T; Chair of the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities
  • Kathy West Evans, Director of Business Relations, Council of State Vocational Rehabilitation Administrators
  • Kristin Vandagriff, Executive Director, Alaska Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities & Special Education

The webinar was part of a series in conjunction with the Reimagining the Rural West Initiative of WGA Chair and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. The Chairman’s Initiative is examining challenges and opportunities in rural economic development, infrastructure and quality of life across the region.
