The Western Governors’ Association submitted policy recommendations relating to rural economic health and development to the House Committee on Agriculture in advance of its hearing, the State of the Rural Economy. The letter of Jan. 19, signed by WGA Executive Director Jim Ogsbury, specifically highlighted the need to strengthen social infrastructure, small business and agriculture in rural communities by reducing barriers to federal programs for rural development and distressed communities, and increasing awareness of career opportunities, expanding education and training programs. “Western Governors believe that strengthening social infrastructure in rural communities is the best strategy to ensure rural quality of life and prosperity,” the letter read. “Congress and federal agencies should increase the proportion of rural economic development and infrastructure funding that goes toward capacity-building.” Read, download the letter.
