WGA urges Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee to prioritize western states’ input on energy development policy for federal lands

The Western Governors’ Association articulated the Governors’ policy about energy development on federal lands for a hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. “We are eager to work with the Administration on policies that involve energy development and use in the West, while protecting the environment, wildlife, and natural resources,” noted the letter signed by WGA Executive Director Jim Ogsbury. However, to create “an effective state-federal partnership in energy development, lands management, and environmental protection,” the outreach of April 26, 2021 urged federal agencies to engage with states in “early, meaningful, substantive, and ongoing consultation in the development of federal policies.” The governors also shared related policy in the WGA Policy Resolutions Energy in the West; Energy Vision for the West; States’ Share of Royalties and Leasing Revenues from Federal Lands and Minerals; and Strengthening the State-Federal Relationship.
