Western Governors seek role in improvement of broadband connectivity speeds for rural area

Western Governors, in comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Utilities Service (RUS) on the Rural eConnectivity Program Final Rule, expressed gratitude for USDA's responsiveness to previous recommendations about adapting the “eligible rural areas” definition and funding eligibility through the Connect America Fund Phase II. However, the outreach of April 26, 2021 signed by WGA Chair Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Vice Chair Idaho Gov. Brad Little also requested that RUS officials recognize that the current definition of broadband (25/3 Mbps) does not correspond with the requisite download and upload speeds for many business, education, and health care applications. And the Governors seek an opportunity to provide recommendations on the connectivity speeds used to determine eligible service areas in the next Funding Opportunity Announcement.
