WGA shares recommendations with BLM and USFS regarding Executive Order on old-growth forests

In correspondence with the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service, the Western Governors’ Association provided feedback relevant to the Biden Administration’s Executive Order (EO) on Strengthening the Nation’s Forests, Communities, and Local Economies. The letter of August 25, signed by WGA Executive Director Jim Ogsbury, highlighted the Governors’ collective bipartisan policy on forest and rangeland management, state consultation in federal decision making, use of state data, and actions to increase community engagement in land management, restoration, and wildfire management. “Western Governors are encouraged that the EO requires the Departments to consult with states as they work to establish a definition framework and use the framework to create an inventory of old growth and mature forests,” the letter read. “Early, meaningful, substantive and ongoing consultation is an integral component of any durable and effective land management strategy.” Read, download the letter for more details
