WGA calls for enhanced federal support for transitioning military servicemembers

In correspondence with the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, the Western Governors’ Association submitted policy recommendations for the Subcommittee’s hearing, Mission Transition: Evaluating Mental Health Support Programs for Separating Servicemembers. The September 10 letter, signed by WGA Executive Director Jack Waldorf, emphasized the importance of veterans’ mental health and called for transitioning servicemembers to receive detailed information on VA benefits and services available to them at least 12 months before they leave the military. It also urged the Department of Veterans Affairs to, “integrate peer support for traumatic brain injury and enhance staffing and training for neurological disorders.” Read the full correspondence for further details.
