In correspondence with Senate leadership and the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Western Governors voiced support for aspects of the Weather Act Reauthorization Act (Weather Act) including the reauthorization of the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) and a sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) forecasting pilot program. In the letter of August 28, 2024, signed by the Western Governors’ Association (WGA) Chair, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Vice Chair, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, the Governors called on the Senate to pass comprehensive weather legislation that addresses the needs of western states. “Western states need reliable water resource information and weather forecasting to support sound water management and minimize the detrimental effects of extreme weather events,” the letter read. “We encourage the Senate to pass comprehensive weather legislation that addresses these needs.” The Weather Act passed with broad bipartisan support in the House. Read the full correspondence for additional details.
