Western Governors praise Senate’s work on broadband connectivity, call for additional provisions

In correspondence with the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation, Western Governors praised recent efforts to address issues of broadband access, particularly the introduction of the BRIDGE Act, Every Child Connected Act, and the bill enabling Wi-Fi access on school buses under the E-Rate Program. But while those bills meet many of the recommendations laid out in WGA’s policy resolution, Broadband Connectivity, the letter of Nov. 17, signed by WGA Chair, Idaho Gov. Brad Little, and Vice-Chair, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, noted that more must be done to achieve true broadband equity throughout the region. In particular, the Governors urged the committee to adopt “a higher, scalable definition of broadband that more accurately reflects modern innovations,” as well as “flexibility within the Federal Communications Commission’s E- Rate Program to deliver home connectivity solutions for unserved and underserved students.” Read, download the letter.
