Western Governors expressed support to the Senate for certain components of the FEMA Improvement Reform and Efficiency Act of 2021 (FIRE Act), which would equip the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with resources to improve federal emergency response and wildfire preparedness. The letter of May 16, signed by WGA Chair, Idaho Gov. Brad Little, and WGA Vice-Chair, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, highlighted WGA’s policy resolution, Disaster Preparedness and Response, which directly aligns with the service improvements, equity provisions and further research parts of the bill. Additionally, the Governors support reexamining the standards used to determine the provision of assistance to homeowners and access to federal aid and the expansion of pre-disaster mitigation programs.
