Western Governors applaud Senate bill to streamline grant applications for rural broadband projects, urge updated broadband definition

In a letter to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Western Governors applauded the Eliminating Barriers to Rural Internet Development Grant Eligibility Act for its focus on easing requirements and streamlining the application processes for rural broadband projects. However, the outreach of Nov. 18, signed by WGA Chair, Idaho Gov. Brad Little, and Vice-Chair, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, also encouraged the Committee to consider establishing a higher standard of broadband for this initiative. “The current definition of 25/3 Mbps,” the letter read, “does not correspond with the requisite download and upload speeds necessary to support many business, education, and health care applications.” Read, download the letter.
