The Western Governors’ Association shared Western Governors’ policy on invasive species in advance of the Feb. 13, 2019 Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works hearing, “The Invasive Species Threat: Protecting Wildlife, Public Health, and Infrastructure.”
The outreach to Chairman John Barrasso and Ranking Member Thomas Carper highlights the ongoing work of the Western Governors’ Biosecurity and Invasive Species Initiative launched by WGA Chair and Hawaii Gov. David Ige. The Initiative examines the effects that nuisance species, pests, and pathogens have on ecosystems, forests, rangelands, watersheds, and infrastructure in the West, and the role that biosecurity plays in addressing these risks.
“WGA has engaged stakeholders in a series of workshops and webinars throughout the West to inform the Governors’ consideration of these important issues,” states the letter signed by WGA Executive Director Jim Ogsbury.
The submission also included Policy Resolution 2016-05, Combating Invasive Species and a March 28, 2018 letter from Western Governors to the Committee encouraging federal action on invasive mussel management.
