The Western Governors’ Association affirmed support of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) proposal to revisit its 2016 rule, “Waste Prevention, Production Subject to Royalties, and Resource Conservation” in a letter sent to BLM Acting Director Brian Steed.
As noted in previous outreach, states currently regulate air quality and oil and gas operations, and Western Governors believe “states are uniquely qualified to assume responsibility for methane regulation.”
The BLM’s proposal to revisit its rule “acknowledges that the Rule overlaps with similar state regulations addressing the loss of gas from federal oil and gas production,” states the letter sent on Feb. 23, 2018. WGA also notes its appreciation for BLM’s “acknowledgment that methane emissions from federal oil and gas production are effectively regulated by states, tribes, and other federal regulations.”
