The Western Governors’ Association urges revisions to Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations to make administration of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) more efficient, timely and effective.
“Western Governors support the creation of more efficient infrastructure permitting and environmental review processes without shortening timelines for state input and consultation, or compromising natural resource, wildlife, environmental, or cultural values,” stated the letter signed by WGA Chair Hawaii Gov. David Ige and Vice Chair North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
Included with the Aug. 3 letter to Associate Director for the National Environmental Policy Act Ted Boling are responses to questions included in the request for comments on how CEQ can accomplish its goal of making the NEPA process more efficient, while also improving the state-federal relationship.
The recommendations are based on the Governors’ policies, including WGA Policy Resolution 2018-15, Modernizing Western Infrastructure; WGA Policy Resolution 2017-01, Building a Stronger State-Federal Relationship; National Forest and Rangeland Management Initiative June 2017 Special Report; and the Governors’ November 28, 2017 letter to CEQ on strengthening the NEPA process.
