LETTER: Western Governors urge support of H.R. 4004, the Social Determinants Accelerator Act

Western Governors encourage leadership of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to consider H.R. 4004, the Social Determinants Accelerator Act, as a tool to help states and local governments consider and address social determinants of health (SDOH). The outreach to Chairman Frank Pallone and Ranking Member Greg Walden reminds that SDOH – conditions in the environments in which people live, learn, work, play, worship and age – “have an enormous influence on individual health risks and outcomes.” The letter of March 5, 2020 signed by WGA Chair North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Vice Chair Oregon Gov. Kate Brown shares policy from the WGA Resolution, Physical and Behavioral Health Care in Western States. The resolution notes that “Western Governors support efforts to identify risks facing high utilizers of health care services ... that provide valuable information on how meeting non-health needs and addressing other social determinants can improve overall health status and decrease health spending.
