Communications Specialist

Position Summary: WGA is seeking a self-starting content creator with exceptional writing skills and a solid understanding of digital media. The Communications Specialist will report to WGA’s Communications Director and be required to multi-task in fast-paced environments as they meet daily content deadlines.

Along with the prospect of working with Governors, Cabinet Secretaries, and their staff, this position will also present a wide array of opportunities to develop technical skills as a member of WGA’s communications team. 


  • Content Creation and Management:
    • Authoring blog posts and newsletters
    • Editing and publicizing policy reports, newsletters, blogs, slideshows, and any other external communications
    • Managing multiple social media accounts, including creating and posting new content, boosting posts, developing effective social media ads, monitoring and responding to posts as appropriate, and reviewing social media analytics
    • Assisting with the livestream of WGA’s initiative workshops (four to six per year) 
    • Publicizing and promoting workshop recordings, podcasts, and other digital content via social media and other external communications
    • Live tweeting WGA’s meetings, workshops, and webinars (around 10 per year) 
    • Updating the communications database 
  • Website Management
    • Monitoring and updating the site as needed 
  • Media Relations
    • Maintaining WGA’s press list
    • Supporting press conferences
    • Providing recordings and photos to media outlets
    • Tracking mentions of WGA, Western Governors, and Western Governors’ policy

Required Skills

  • Exceptional writing ability
  • Ability to perform under daily deadline pressure
  • Experience with social media, including platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Hootsuite 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel 
  • Experience with web publishing platforms, including CMS platforms (WGA uses Expression Engine), YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify 
  • Experience with storage apps, including Google Drive and Dropbox 
  • Available to travel regularly throughout the West (about one week every two months)
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends as needed

  • Experience with video recording – WGA uses Canon XA35 
  • Experience with video editing – WGA uses Adobe Premiere
  • Experience with photography – WGA uses a Canon DSLR
  • Experience with photo editing – WGA uses Adobe Photoshop 
  • Experience with audio recording – WGA uses a Zoom recorder 
  • Experience with audio editing – WGA uses Adobe Audition
  • Experience with graphic design

Salary and Benefits

The position is full-time and located in Denver, with a hybrid remote/in-office schedule. The salary range for the position is $45,000 – $55,000 per year. Actual compensation within the range will be dependent upon the individual’s experience, skills, and qualifications.
