Western Governors urge state consultation by Council on Environmental Quality on NEPA review

Western Governors urge the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) to consult with Governors’ offices in any review of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations.

“Western states assigned NEPA responsibilities under [the Surface Transportation Project Delivery Program] have had great success in reducing the timelines for project approval and can provide valuable input on the program’s efficacy,” stated the letter signed by WGA Chair Hawaii Gov. David Ige and WGA Vice Chair North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. “These states should be consulted in the development of any federal policy affecting this program.”

The April 8, 2019 outreach to CEQ Chair and Managing Director Mary Neumayr also highlights the role states assume the Federal Highway Administration’s NEPA responsibilities for federal highway projects.
