February 12, 2018: Western Governors have provided recommendations to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Assistant Administrator William Wehrum regarding the Governors’ priorities for air quality policy and regulation in the West.
The Governors asserted, in part, that “cooperative federalism in air quality management must be strengthened” to properly address western issues. In all cases, “EPA should recognize state authority under the Clean Air Act and accord states sufficient flexibility to create air quality programs tailored to individual state needs, industries and economies.”
Additionally, the Governors shared recommendations on improving communications between states and the EPA, co-regulation, ozone exceedances, exceptional events, regional haze, wildfire and prescribed fire and more.
The letter sent Feb. 12, 2018 was signed by WGA Chair and South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard and WGA Vice Chair and Hawaii Gov. David Ige.
