Western Governors share comments, recommendations on FY 2021 appropriations, activities of DOL, HHS, DOE, DOC

The Western Governors’ Association has delivered testimony on behalf of Western Governors on FY 2021 appropriations and activities before House and Senate subcommittees.

House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies: WGA Executive Director Jim Ogsbury offered testimony on March 4, 2020 that included recommendations such as:

  • Adequate funding of Perkins State Grants, which enable students to take advantage of technical education opportunities and participate in programs of study designed around specific professions.
  • Recognition that Governors and states are in the best position to determine how to use federal funding for their economies;
  • Ensure that Career and technical education programs align with statewide visions for education and workforce development;
  • Expand education and training programs for cybersecurity;

House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies: WGA Executive Director Jim Ogsbury offered testimony on March 4, 2020 that provided comment on two items within the jurisdiction of the Department of Commerce. Specifically, WGA recommended adequate and dedicated funding for two programs:

  • The National Integrated Drought Information System program, which promotes a coordinated and integrated approach to managing future drought;
  • The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which strives to improve the accuracy of broadband data coverage measurements.
