The 2014 Western Governors’ Association Annual Meeting attracted 10 Western Governors and several federal guests for productive discussions on wildfires and proposed regulations on carbon emissions, as well as the announcement of six new policy resolutions.
Day 1 was historic as Western Governors participated in a live video-teleconference with President Barack Obama to discuss efforts to end the practice of "fire borrowing." The day also included the renewal of a memorandum of understanding with NOAA to continue collaboration on drought, flooding and wildfire preparedness.
On Day 2 Western Governors met with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy to discuss the recently proposed regulations on carbon emissions from existing coal plants.
On Day 3 the governors elected Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval Chairman of WGA and Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber Vice-Chairman. The governors also announced six new policy resolutions.
Attending Western Governors included: WGA Chairman and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Vice Chairman and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Arizona's Jan Brewer, Idaho's Butch Otter, Kansas's Sam Brownback, Montana's Steve Bullock, North Dakota's Jack Dalrymple, South Dakota's Dennis Daugaard, Utah's Gary Herbert and Wyoming's Matt Mead.
