wildlife08In 2007 the WGA approved the policy resolution, Protecting Wildlife Migration Corridors and Crucial Wildlife Habitat in the West. This resolution describes the importance of wildlife corridors and crucial habitat and asks the Western states, in partnership with important stakeholders, to identify key wildlife corridors and crucial wildlife habitats in the West and make recommendations on policy options and tools for preserving those landscapes.

This 2008 report is based on a multi-state effort that included six working groups, each of which was charged with developing findings and recommendations on various aspects of wildlife corridors and crucial habitat.

Water Needs and Strategies for a Sustainable Future: Next Steps

water08The 2006 WGA report Water Needs and Strategies for a Sustainable Future contained wide-ranging recommendations to address the ever-increasing challenges associated with water management in the West.

This 2008 report is based on a multi-state effort that included six working groups, each of which was charged with developing findings and recommendations on various aspects of wildlife corridors and crucial habitat.

Transportation Fuels for the Future

transfuelsThe Governors' Advisory Committee on Transportation Fuels for the Future has proposed strategies in this 2008 report to accelerate the development of alternative transportation fuels. These fuels hold the promise of improving energy security, as well as reducing the risk to the environment and economy posed by our near-total dependence on petroleum for conventional transportation fuel.

The Advisory Committee also proposed strategies for improving vehicle fuel efficiency. Alternative fuels considered included biofuels (ethanol, biomethane/biogas, and biobutanol), bio- and renewable-diesel, electricity, coal-to-liquids, natural gas/propane and hydrogen.

Deploying Near-zero Technologies for Coal: A Path Forward

coal08This 2008 summary of the WGA workshop, "Deploying Near-Zero Technologies for Coal: A Path Forward," identifies concepts that western state governments could consider to enable the technical and regulatory pathways for deployment of near-zero-emission coal-fired power plants.

The workshop was part of a continuing effort by WGA to implement the recommendations of the Clean and Diversified Energy Advisory Committee convened by the Governors to increase, by 2015, clean energy generation in the West by 30,000 megawatts.

Building an Energy-Efficient Future

efficiencyThis 2008 report includes recommended policies and best practices for energy-efficient building that could dramatically reduce the demand for energy and water, while providing a boost to the region's economy.

The recommendations included in the report were developed by stakeholders participating in a 2007 workshop. Participants included representatives of building industries, utilities, public interest groups, all levels of government and energy service companies.

Wildlife Corridors: Oil & Gas

This 2007 report from the Wildlife Corridors Initiative Oil and Gas Working Group makes specific recommendations for integrating protection of crucial habitat and corridors into oil and gas development in the West.
