The Regulatory and Permitting Information Desktop (RAPID) toolkit is the culmination of a multi-year effort by Western Governors to tackle the challenge of transmission line siting and permitting in the West.
The online tool is designed to streamline the challenge of siting and permitting transmission lines in the West. RAPID was unveiled by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, Chairman of the Western Governors' Association, at the 2014 Winter Meeting in Las Vegas.
RAPID was developed to meet the challenge of growing demand to build new transmission lines in the West. Siting and permitting a new transmission line is difficult and requires review and approval of overlapping and sometimes conflicting state, federal, local and tribal regulations.
The toolkit integrates information related to potential transmission routes and key permitting and siting requirements of federal and state agencies into one convenient website. The tool also facilitates communication between developers and agencies and allows the sharing of best practices among all stakeholders.
