Western Governors promote collaboration between states and U.S. Forest Service in rulemaking changes

Western Governors have congratulated Chief of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Tony Tooke on his appointment and shared WGA policies regarding the work of the USFS to encourage a close and productive working relationship.

The letter sent on November 21, 2017 referenced previous collaboration between the USFS and WGA on the Western Governors’ National Forest and Rangeland Management Initiative, and discussions with WGA staff on ways to promote consultation with states in rulemaking processes.

The governors expressed their concern over the proposed rule to revamp the USFS public participation process. The governors encouraged the USFS to design a process that addresses its concerns about unnecessary delays in implementing non-controversial manual and handbook changes, while ensuring that states are aware of proposed changes to USFS policy.
