Western Governors submitted comments to Principal Deputy Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Gregory Sheehan on January 5, 2018, regarding FWS’s efforts to review both agency-wide and compensatory mitigation policies under the Endangered Species Act. The Governors noted the important role mitigation plays in wildlife management and conservation and how they rely on its use in developing and executing species conservation strategies. The Governors strongly urged the Department of Interior and FWS to engage with them in development of a federal-state coordination process that would facilitate cooperation on land management challenges such as mitigation policy.
